Facing your inner self or your past is difficult for most people; for Sagara's tenacious heroine, it is nightmarish. The fifth book in the Elantra series focuses on the missing six months of Kaylin's life. With prose that is elegantly descriptive, Sagara answers some longstanding questions and adds another layer of mystery. Each visit to this amazing world, with its richness of place and character, is one to relish.

Since joining the Hawks seven years ago, Pvt. Kaylin Neya has done her best to seal off events from a very dark time in her life. That defense mechanism is breached when a face from her past arrives with a summons. Kaylin is to return to the fief lord Barren or he will reveal the dark truth of how and why she met the Hawklord. That becomes a secondary issue, however, when Kaylin reveals to dragon lord Sanabalis her latest experience in the Keepers Garden. Now it is critical that Kaylin and Lord Tiamaris of the Dragon Court discover what threatening darkness is brewing in the fief of Barren. (LUNA, Aug., 461 pp., $14.95)
