Image of The Chase (Fast Track)

The fourth novel in McCarthy’s sensual Fast Track series is a very enjoyable romance. The characters are believable and, if the storyline is a little shallow, it is mercifully free of improbable twists or impossible turns. Fans of the series will also be glad to see all their old friends.

Kendall has fought her way up in the male-dominated world of stock car racing with single-minded focus. Ever since Evan Monroe broke her heart 10 years ago, she has pushed aside emotion to concentrate on gaining acceptance as a female driver. Now she is in the big time, racing against Evan himself. Evan, meanwhile, is having a rotten season, and has lost his sponsor as a result. It doesn’t help to see Kendall again; she broke his heart so badly back when they were young and foolish. Now they are being forced into close contact because he is going to be sponsored by the same company and they want a twosome ad campaign. The old spark is not only there, it is still a raging fire. Will they be able to get past their old hurts and let their love light shine through? (BERKLEY SENSATION, Apr., 304 pp., $7.99)
