In the second of back-to-back releases in her compelling Moonlight series, Gideon tests the viability of the burgeoning relationship between her protagonists. She does a terrific job with her worldbuilding as her characters and readers discover dark and hidden secrets.

With her lover, shapeshifter Max Savoie, now in charge of his deceased boss’s empire, Detective Cee Cee Caissie is walking a fine line. The murder of the daughter of a political enemy of Max’s places him at the top of the suspect list. To protect Max and his shapeshifter secret, Cee Cee must follow her superior’s orders and distance herself while she works the brutal case. But the killer has information about Max’s heritage that he desperately needs — and what Max doesn’t know could destroy them both. (POCKET, Jul., 375 pp., $7.99)

Ms. Gideon's second book to this series was riveting. I didn’t want to put the book down and couldn’t read it fast enough. The depth and complexity of Charlottes and Max's relationship is revealed as the mystery and secrets unfold in their lives, both struggling to balance their love, from two different sides of the law, and it’s not over yet!
