CHASING LILACS
by Carla Stewart

Genre: Inspirational, Mainstream

RT Rating

This first-person narrative contains resolute characters and vivid descriptions of a small Texas community in the 1950s. If her debut is any indication, Stewart has a promising future.

Twelve-year-old Sammie Tucker’s life changed dramatically during the summer of 1958, when her mama, Rita, was hospitalized for shock treatments in hopes of curing her “nerve” condition. Mama seems unable to get past the loss of Sammie’s baby sister. Things get worse when Sammie’s aunt moves in and tries to lay claim to her father. Then Sammie befriends Cly MacLemore, who is staying with his Uncle Slim (whom some believe to be a murderer). (FAITHWORDS, Jun., 304 pp., $13.99)
