This is a cohesive and mostly very readable anthology from some of the top names in urban fantasy. A great introduction to both the genre and the different worlds of the characters, readers will enjoy these short glimpses into the lives of well-loved characters. Not every story is a winner, but enough of them are to make the duds fade into the background.

This collection is full of stories about strong independent women who aren’t afraid to kick a little or a lot of butt in the course of slaying a few demons or other supernatural baddies. There are 13 stories in all, and nearly all of them are worthwhile reading. One of the highlights of the collection is Susan Krinard’s “Mist,” about a Valkyrie in modern-day San Francisco who guards an ancient relic as, unbeknownst to her, figures from her past are plotting to take it back. Another strong story is L.A. Banks’ “Wanted: Dead or Alive” about a female bounty hunter turned vampire and her conscience. (TOR, Jun., 320 pp., $14.99)
