When his best friend dies and leaves behind a pregnant wife, police officer Brendan Quinn feels obligated to step in and help out his friend's widow. He soon realizes that the dislike he felt for Mindy Fenton was really his way of dealing with an attraction to her. His guilt and her pregnancy complicate matters even more. In With Child (4) by Janice Kay Johnson, the author does a good job describing Mindy's feelings of helplessness and desperation and Brendan's guilt over his attraction. Her characters have depth, especially Brendan, who also has to come to terms with intimacy issues leftover from a troubled youth.
