Meier’s newest mystery featuring amateur sleuth Lucy Stone has a strong plot, and the descriptions of Maine in mid-winter give a realistic sense of the setting. The description of the murder scene is quite dramatic. At times the narrative becomes a bit too chatty, but overall this is an enjoyable story.

Lucy Stone’s latest assign-ment as a reporter for the Penny- saver is a Valentine’s Day feature on a local upscale chocolate boutique. Lucy is annoyed with the fluff assignment; she would rather cover an ongoing investigation into the murder of a local fisherman. However, when the husband-stealing diva who manages the chocolate shop is also murdered, Lucy winds up in the middle of the town’s most shocking crime. (KENSINGTON, Jan., 304 pp., $24.00)
