This first in a series opens with a punch and stays on course from start to finish. The plot is smoothly woven without extraneous details to lull you to sleep. A new voice in the urban fantasy genre, Grover Swank is definitely one to watch. Add this to your shelves.

Emma Thompson doesn’t know what stability is. Everything she owns fits in a suitcase. She and her 5-year-old son Jake, who can glimpse the future, are in hiding from a group of men targeting them. Though she is reluctant to trust mercenary Will Davenport, Jake declares that Will is The Chosen One who must protect Emma from the wealthy and influential men hunting her power, a power she doesn’t even knows she has. Will safeguards Emma and Jake on a cross-country track, all while being besieged with memories from his past. (DENISE GROVER SWANK, Oct., 357 pp.,$14.99)
