The second chapter in Perry's Guardians of Destiny series tracks the adventures of scholar and unlikely thief Carrie Woods. This combo of magic, ancient Chinese scrolls and dangerous passion adds up to plenty of fun.

Determined to complete her thesis and prove the existence of the Scrolls of Destiny, Carrie traces one to
a Chinese monastery. Sneaking into
the archives, she starts taking pictures
of the scrolls when she's interrupted. Impulsively deciding to "borrow" them, Carrie heads back to the States, not knowing a Guardian is in hot pursuit.

Metal Guardian Max Prescott knows exactly how to tempt the pretty thief. He arranges for Carrie to translate some of his collection of Chinese texts. Retrieving the Book of Water is imperative, but Max doesn't count on his attraction to Carrie. (FOREVER, Oct., 368 pp., $6.99)
