Book three in the Downside Ghosts series lives up to expectations. Kane’s dark and dangerous world is a unique setting for her anti-heroes. The heroine’s realistic flaws make her more interesting and set her apart from others in the genre. Fans of urban fantasy will love the tight plot, swift pace and twists and turns.

Mangled human corpses are discovered in Downside, and the Church of Real Truth has Chess working the case with another agency. She’s forced to take a dangerous oath. If she talks about the investigation or shows disloyalty to the Church, the elders will remove her from her body, take her to the spirit prison and leave her there until they determine she’s been punished enough. But Chess’ drug dealer, the city’s crime boss, finds out about her assignment and wants to be kept informed. Chess has her hands full and she still has to deal with killer wraiths, first elders and dark magic. (DEL REY, Aug., 416 pp., $7.99)
