Zanetti’s Kayrs vampire family saga continues with this second installment, which can be read as a stand-alone, although reading the first book might help with the complicated cast of characters and plot. The book intrigues with plenty of foreshadowing, but provides no wrap-up. Zanetti’s creativity makes one wish that she had applied that imagination to coming up with a hero who is not quite the overbearing bully who appears on these pages.
Genetic scientist Emma is fighting to save her pregnant sister from a virus injected while Cara was the captive of a warring vampire clan. Protecting her sister and niece has always been her prime duty, and Emma is not about to stop now. But Cara is now married to a vampire warrior whose brother Dage is King of the Realm, a king determined to mark Emma as his mate. Emma is fiercely attracted to Dage, despite his caveman-like attitude. (BRAVA, Nov., 352 pp., $14.00)
