Clare delivers in this trilogy second. The paces she puts her characters through really force them to earn their heart-wrenching angst, and you’ll feel right along with them as they battle demons and search for love. Really very well done. Be sure to start with the first in the Infernal Devices trilogy, Clockwork Angel, to best enjoy this tale.

Still recovering from her brother Nate’s betrayal, Tessa’s also dealing with Will’s sudden coldness. But soon Charlotte’s hold on the institute is challenged and all must band together to find Mortmain in two short weeks. Tessa’s growing feelings for Jem are complicated by Will’s on-again, off-again niceness. As Tessa trains with Sophie to learn to fight, she helps in the search for Mortmain — and for answers about herself. What is she? Why is Mortmain so obsessed? When a shocking betrayal by Jessamine gives them clues to these mysteries, the group follows the trail, as Tessa heads down a heartbreaking path all her own. (MARGARET K.
