Book Review

THE COUNTERFEIT MADAM
by Pat McIntosh

Genre: Mystery/Suspense/Thriller, Mystery, Historical

RT Rating

Fans of Scottish historical romances may want to give this series set in medieval Glasgow a go. The characters are well drawn and the setting is vivid. This is a somewhat challenging book, as the historical authenticity extends to the language, but McIntosh translates the Gaelic and provides a Scottish dictionary on her website. The writing is excellent and the mystery riveting.

Gilbert Cunningham, the archbishop’s quaester (lawyer and constable) and his wife are offered a property by Dame Isabella, an unpleasant distant relative, who wants to transfer land so that they will abandon Gil’s foster son’s inheritance claim. A brothel stands on part of the land, and is connected to Isaballa’s subsequent murder, and possibly to Gil’s separate investigation of counterfeit coins. (SOHO, Jun., 304 pp., $25.00)
