Debut novelist Holmes pulls heartstrings in this sweet testimony about love and family. The author includes just enough realistic opposing emotion to keep the novel from becoming overly sentimental.

Jenny Lucas hasn't been home for five years -- since her breakup with her high school boyfriend. Jenny returns to face her disappointed father and supportive grandmother in hopes that they can all mend fences and her 5-year-old daughter, Isabella, can get to know her own father, David. Yet things don't go exactly as planned, and Jenny has another secret she needs to reveal and doesn't know quite how to do so. (TYNDALE, May, 310 pp., $13.99)
