At the Kingsborough Ball, anything is possible — even a second chance at love. Barnes uses the premise to full advantage, adding a dash of mystery to extend the slower-paced plot and add interest to a lovely, but uncomplicated romance. Her charming, uplifting tale allows readers to watch a woman come into her own because of the right man’s devotion.

Recently widowed, Katherine, Countess of Crosby, is not looking for a husband, but a waltz with her childhood friend Lucien Marvaine could change her mind. Lucien never felt he had a chance with Kate. Now he has the opportunity to woo and win her heart. Things go as planned until a woman near Kate is shot and Lucien realizes that Kate was the target. With danger stalking her, Kate must recognize Lucien as a man she can trust. (AVON, Aug., 384 pp., $7.99)
