The world of Jacquelyn Frank’s Morphate series is refreshingly imaginative, and the revelation in this second book will only draw fans further into this high-stakes paranormal standoff between humans and their mysterious foes. Though the camaraderie of the security team at the heart of this plot is evident, the dialogue between the main couple is very stilted at times, and the “battle of the sexes” motif feels somewhat forced and pejorative. Nevertheless, fans will no doubt find much to enjoy here, and newcomers will be easily carried away by this fast-paced narrative and spicy interactions.

When Liam Nash and his elite security team are hired to protect the reclusive Devon Candler, Liam is convinced that this job is going to be nothing more than babysitting a paranoid baby. With the frantic, bloodthirsty Morphates hunting humans, Liam has enough real work on his hands. But much to his surprise, the woman he finds at the secluded estate is stunning, clever and irresistible — with a secret she is desperate to pro- tect and enemies who are clearly bent on taking her out. Suddenly the man who is known for his cold calculation and his controlled displays of force finds himself involved in a very personal battle to protect the woman who has captured his heart.
