Jack comes from a large family, and with his good looks and wild ways, he expects to go adventuring. When his "Paw" dies, his "Maw" wants to move to Mexico. When his brothers are killed, Jack never goes anywhere.

Annie Mapes, the new school teacher, doesn't want to DARE TO LOVE Jack, but she's unable to escape her feelings for him, feelings that he returns.

The story is simple, but bogged down with details. Not only do we read Annie's letters, but we have to stop every time she dips her quill into the ink. The conversations between the characters are real-perhaps too real, filled as they are with heavy dialect and common everyday gossip and chit chat. There are so many characters weaving in and out of the story that it is hard to follow. SENSUAL (June, 381 pp., $5.99)
