It’s an urban fantasy bonanza in this new anthology from a pack of the hottest authors around. Some of these stories are stand-alones, but others are tied to various authors’ series. In a couple of cases, the short stories are told from the perspectives of the series’ secondary characters. Danger, darkness and treachery abound as the lines between good, evil and heroics are sometimes blurred. This collection is a good way to get your pulse pounding!

A sampling of the offerings from this anthology includes Jim Butcher’s “Even Hand,” which features a tale from the perspective of Harry Dresden’s nemesis, crime lord John Marcone. In Andrews’ “A Questionable Client,” readers learn how Kate Daniels first met Saiman. Vaughn offers “God’s Creatures,” which follows one of werewolf hunter Cormac’s early hunts. Pettersson is also on board with “Shifting Star,” which is told from the perspective of newly developed tupla Skamar. (ST. MARTIN’S GRIFFIN, Jul., 384 pp., $14.99)
