Liu is back with a perilously enchanting tale that explores the ramifications of a chance meeting in her latest Dirk & Steele novel. This reverse Little Mermaid story is dark and edgy with an apocalyptic threat hovering ominously overhead. Liu’s protagonists, so dramatically affected by their brief interaction as children, lend a hypnotic quality to this tale that explores the dangerous power of dreams. A terrific concoction filled with choice amounts of danger, passion and betrayal!

Jenny was 12 when she found the wounded silver boy on the beach. The fact he had fins instead of legs was mysterious and wonderful. The merman who collected the boy was terrifying, for he dragged the protesting child back into the sea. Years later, as a marine biologist, Jenny is still looking for her lost friend. Jenny’s dangerous family has split into factions, one of which created the Consortium. Working for the other faction, A Priori, Jenny hunts the strange and mysterious.

Banished from the sea, Perrin has never stopped dreaming of Jenny. Now their connection and shared dreams could save the world from a menace awakening at the bottom of the sea. (AVON, Dec., 384 pp., $7.99)
