Book Review

THE DARK ENQUIRY
by Deanna Raybourn

Genre: Mystery/Suspense/Thriller, Mystery, Historical

RT Rating

Raybourn’s characters are intriguing and likable, and her descriptions of period dress and mannerisms are carefully detailed. Lady Julia’s boisterous behavior creates humorous interactions throughout the novel. Early chapters contain a bit too much of her opinions about issues not central to the story, which slows the development of the mystery.

Newlywed Lady Julia Brisbane is determined to partner with her husband Nicholas in his detective business. Although Brisbane humors her, he is mostly intent on keeping her out of harm’s way. When her brother becomes a client, Lady Julia forces her way into the investigations through crafty planning. She finds herself in the midst of a web of dangerous secrets that could have deadly consequences for her family. (MIRA, Jul., 400 pp., $14.95)
