Bridei is taken from his home as a child and raised by the druid Broichan. During his years at Broichan's home, he discovers an infant, Tuala, outside on Midwinter's Eve. Abandoned by the Good Folk, she is fostered alongside Bridei until he is sent away to learn the arts of war. Tuala, as she grows up, is first loved and then feared by the household. Separated by years and many struggles, Tuala and Bridei eventually find their way back to each other and an uncertain future.

Weaving together many disparate strands of ancient British history with a generous helping of educated speculation, Marillier has written a somewhat interesting but predictable first volume in a new series. (May, 512 pp., $27.95)
