Those fun-loving Harpys drive events in the next chapter of the Lords of the Underworld series. The Harpy take on families, grudges and war is amusing and scary — a fact Showalter plays to the max. As always, simultaneous events lay the foundations for future crises. Plenty of whacked-out humor and hardcore action make this tale a page-turner.

The ill-advised act of trying to steal her nemesis’s captive during the Harpy Games left 14-year-old Kaia Skyhawk filled with guilt and in disgrace after the freed captive slaughtered most of the participants. As a result, none of the Skyhawk sisters have been invited to the games for centuries … until now. Kaia and her sisters know it is probably a set-up, but they have no choice. Despite his refusal to accept it, Kaia knows that Strider is her mate. Strider and his demon Defeat are doing their best not to admit the attraction. Events take an ominous turn, when Strider realizes that first prize for winning the Harpy Games is the Pairing Rod — an ancient artifact that could destroy the Lords. Kaia and her team must win at any cost! (HQN, Oct., 432 pp., $7.99)
