Displaying plenty of warmth, passion and excitement, Duvall makes a noteworthy debut with her Immortal Guardians series. Though the premise is similar to other series, Duvall’s characters are rich and layered, helping the reader to instantly invest in their travails. This is a strong start in what looks to be a thrilling and chilling new paranormal series. Fantastic!

Music professor Sarah Bingham feels like she has fallen down a rabbit hole after she intervenes during the attempted slaying of a man. However it turns out that “man” is not quite correct, for Roland Warbrook is actually an immortal guardian who protects humans against the ravages of vampires. When the badly wounded Roland refuses medical attention, Sarah gets suspicious, but after a phone call to his “CIA” boss Seth, she relents. But keeping Sarah in the dark is not possible after Bastien, a vampire with a grudge against Roland, sends more vampire troops to kill him. Now Sarah is immersed in a dark and deadly world where violence, blood and death are all too common. (ZEBRA, Feb., 320 pp., $6.99)
