Duvall’s newest heroine is very much in the habit of kicking butt and taking names. For the past six years Krysta has been eliminating vampires. Immortal Guardian Étienne is impressed and intrigued. Trust is not easy for either of these protagonists, so their budding relationship is a tad rocky. Duvall does an outstanding job building both a rich world and a compelling cast of characters.
Krysta’s unique ability to see auras comes in handy when hunting vampires. However, Krysta doesn’t know what to make of the assistance she receives from stranger Étienne. Étienne can’t believe human Krysta efficiently takes out vamps. But it comes with a cost, as Krysta is regularly injured. Luckily, she can rely on her brother, Sean, who heals with the touch of his hands. As Krysta and Sean learn more about Étienne and the Immortal Guardians, a deadly threat the Guardians thought was contained rises once again. (ZEBRA, Oct., 320 pp., $7.99)
