Arthur excels at creating one fantastic paranormal after another. She hits the mark again with her new Dark Angels series, which focuses on kick-butt character Risa Jones. Risa’s challenges to save the world are exciting, gripping and out-and-out enjoyable. Even when something is stealing the souls of children, Darkness Unbound entertains.

Risa can see the reapers. Now one is following her — a good-looking one at that. When he explains that he’s following her because he’s looking for her father, she gets a good laugh. Her father would never contact her. He never has. When a plot is uncovered that would control the gates of heaven and hell, causing the ultimate end of civilization it seems her father is at the center of it all. Now everyone, demon, angel and other alike are following her — and some want her dead. To save her life, the lives of her friends and humanity, Risa must find the person who is stealing souls and seeking to close the gates forever. (DELL, Oct., 384 pp., $7.99)
