If the supernatural doesn't kill him, the paperwork certainly will. In this next chapter of the offbeat adventures of
psychometrist Simon Canderous, Strout returns to the concealed world of the supernatural hiding in plain sight in New York. One of his strengths is his ability to create a sympathetic character and show Simon's wacky world through his woefully overworked eyes.
Although he's now a member of the Fraternal Order of Goodness and works for the underfunded NYC Dept. of Extraordinary Affairs, Simon still struggles to comprehend the new world he's been thrust into. On the plus side is his developing relationship with ex-cultist turned librarian Jane; on the downside is a potential vampire incursion.
Worse, however, is the sudden
resurgence of the criminal past Simon thought he left behind. Now he must deal with psycho former compatriots,
a deranged necromancer and a host
of zombies. Is this what Simon really signed up for? (ACE, Mar., 320 pp., $7.99)
