Vampire politics and nefarious plots run amok in the penultimate chapter of Sookie Stackhouse’s long-running story. Harris has taken both Sookie and readers on an unforgettable ride with biting humor, treachery and blood-soaked violence. Dead- locked features all the elements that have made this series such a pleasure. Get ready to roll!

Everyone is on edge since vampire king Felipe de Castro came to town to find out what happened to Victor. Eric, Pam and Sookie certainly don’t want Felipe to learn they killed Victor, so they are treading carefully. Sookie is not happy to arrive at a “party” at Eric’s to find him drinking blood from a young woman. When that same woman turns up dead on Eric’s lawn, they suspect a plot. Bill and Sookie start investi- gating, but the trail takes them in an unexpected direction. (ACE, May, 336 pp., $27.95)
