A breathtaking book filled with suspense. The Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series continues with a tightly woven mystery depicting love, betrayal, the shadow of past events and the promise of the future. Set in Victorian London when the empire is beginning to crumble, Perry has found the perfect details and tone to illustrate the culture and politics of the time. Readers will become emotionally connected with well-written secondary characters who support the commander of the Special Branch.

Thomas Pitt, head of the Special Branch, is assigned two crimes that seem beneath him. Signs of a bloody confrontation are found outside the home of a naval weapons expert, and his wife’s lady’s maid has disappeared. Could this be related to the naval secrets the man knows? When a woman’s body is found in a nearby quarry, the pressure is on Pitt to bring the investigation to a close. Before he is done, Pitt risks his career as he tries to save Britain from spies and a terrible future. (BALLANTINE, Apr., 320 pp., $27.00)
