In Defending the Rancher's Daughter (3) by Carla Cassidy, rancher Kate Sampson has just buried her father and already escaped an attempt on her life. Her father's death is looking like murder, and it's soon apparent that the killer won't be satisfied until Kate is out of the picture too. She reluctantly calls in family friend Zack West to investigate. When Zack finally realizes that Kate is in deadly danger, he vows to protect her and catch the murderer. Too much resentment and constant reminders of the reason behind Kate's bitter feelings toward Zack slow the story down in spots. Clues are sparse, and the truth is revealed in an abrupt ending, leaving the story feeling not quite resolved.
