RT Rating

A well-paced, heart-wrenching tale of loyalty, courage and love set in a ravaged dystopian world and featuring convincing characters, potent prose and palpable emotion. Readers will fall in love with rational, noble Logan; he’s a far cry from the quasi-mysterious, angsty bad boy archetype of YA novels.

Within the walls of Baalboden, beneath the shadow of the city’s brutal leader, Rachel Adams has a secret. While other girls sew dresses and obey their male protectors, Rachel can wield a sword and survive in the wilderness. When her father is declared dead, Rachel is assigned a new protector, his apprentice. Logan McEntire is an outcast orphan, an inventor focused on escaping. When it goes wrong, Rachel and Logan must battle through the Wasteland. (BALZER + BRAY, Sep., 416 pp., $17.99, ISBN: 9780062117182, HC, 13 & Up)
