Finally, we have an erotic novel that steers clear of the ingenue-to-goddess trope in a delightful return to old-school erotica. While there’s a bit of love involved here, the prevailing theme is Sam and Jack’s D/s relationship and Sam’s adjustment to answering her Master’s call at any given moment. The role of Jack’s assistant feels a bit awkward at times, but the conflict he brings to Sam is delicious. This is the erotic novel that those who have come to the genre in recent years should read immediately.

Sam is involved in a 24/7 BDSM relationship with her Dom, Jack, after two previous unsuccessful relationships. Sam tries to anticipate Jack’s next move, but each time he manages to keep himself several steps ahead. Complicating things is Jack’s assistant, Alex, who Sam feels may be more than simply Jack’s assistant and the sometimes delivery mechanism for her various punishments. (CLEIS, Jan., 288 pp., $16.95)
