Hilaire’s sophomore effort is an enthralling, multilayered story that sees an all-powerful angel succumb to the power of true love and a remarkable human whose heart and courage give her the power of a god. The trope of a “bond mate” is always tricky, but this story complicates the issue, making for an emotional journey rather than a predictable outcome. Newcomers might have a little trouble navigating the first half, but the passion and intensity of the story will sweep away series beginners and fans alike.

Logan Calhoun is the last full-blooded Paladin warrior, an angel sworn to defend humanity. Perhaps because his father is The All Powerful, Logan has always seen humans as weak and fallible — until he meets Jessica Waters, a homicide detective whose determination is as fierce as his own. Unfortunately, Jessica is also the lead detective on a murder investigation that intimately involves the Paladins. Logan knows he should find the courage to erase her memories and remove the threat she poses, but the longer he remains in her company, the more he is prepared to move heaven and earth to keep Jessica safe from the dark powers that threaten them both.
