THE DERVISH HOUSE
Genre: Science Fiction, General Science Fiction
This sci-fi thriller explores politics, terrorist threats and nanotechnology against the setting of Istanbul, Turkey, in 2027. The complex plot and its unique characters make for an intriguing read. McDonald weaves several plotlines together with a whirling dervish house, a character in its own right, as the common denominator.
Needet is in a packed tram when a woman sets off a bomb and her head explodes. The Swarmbots, gnat-size devices that lock together, arrive to investigate the seemingly random act of terrorism. Needet avoids them because he doesn’t want to be questioned. He can’t let them find out he’s moved into the dervish house. His brother intends to make it the home of the secret Islamic order that he belongs to. Meanwhile, Turkey is about to celebrate the fifth anniversary of its move to the European Union. It’s the largest but one of the poorest countries in the EU. Tensions run high as old politics and power struggles arise. (PYR, Aug., 410 pp., $26.00)
