The award-winning Cat and Bones saga takes a dark and tumultuous turn in the fourth installment of this remarkable first-person series. Frost never shies away from forcing her protagonists to face both internal and external demons. That character complexity is a major reason for this series' impressive success. Frost's dazzling blend of urban fantasy action and passionate relationships makes her a true phenomenon.

Just when Cat hoped to spend quality time strengthening her relationship with her vampire husband Bones, a shadow from the past emerges. Unbeknownst to Cat, when she was a teenager she was taken by a master vampire named Gregor in his attempt to change the future. Cat was removed from Gregor's custody by Mencheres, who erased young Cat's memories of the events.

Gregor escapes prison and claims that he, not Bones, is Cat's true husband, and Cat's volatile emotions run the gamut from anger to curiosity. What did this master vampire once mean to her? Gregor's sinister persistence now threatens everything Cat holds dear. (AVON, Aug., 400 pp., $7.99)

Where is the love?

Submitted by Oliva Love on June 25, 2010 - 2:56am.

From the very first chapter Cat & Bones seemed to be stressed out and fighting. That should have been my first red flag for what was to come. Just about every conversation between them for the first half of the book was mean and bitter and by that point, I didn't care for either one of them. It wasn't funny bantering like the first 2 books, it was knife in the back and twist type of dialog.

The villan Gregor - Boy did his character development fizzle. I was very disappointed in Cat's recovered memories. So much more could have been done here. He wasn't even much of a badass IMO. Bleh.

Support characters Vlad and Spade - Loved them both in this book. Especially Vlad, I hope he finds someone in a future book. He seems to be Cat's truest friend. He is honest, dependable and supportive even if he doesn't agree.

Overall, when I finished the book I was glad I read it however I feel Cat & Bones have played out and it is time to focus on some other characters in this world JF has created. I look forward to the spin-off First Drop of Crimson.

Destined for an Early Grave

A powerful vampire named Gregor claims that Half-Vampire Cat Crawfield is his wife. Bones is not about to let Cat go anywhere near Gregor. They begin moving around the world, trying to stay one step ahead of Gregor who is a "dreamsnatcher" and has the ability to take Cat away from Bones while she is sleeping.

Another great addition to the Night Huntress series. Frost's characters are very well drawn and feel like real people. It was very upsetting to have a vampire from the past try to come between Cat and Bones. This plot has lots of twists and turns. Just when I thought I figured out what would happen next, the story would go in a completely different direction. I can't wait for the next book in the series. My rating: 5 Stars.
