Rath Talward has just learned that he is the Waiting King, and that his love for Maura Woodbury, the Destined Queen, isn't forbidden after all. Together, Rath and Maura travel to the Vestan Islands and learn more about their shared and separate destinies. They have many obstacles to overcome before they can finally be to-gether, and these challenges will test the strength of their relationship to the limits.

In the second book in Hale's series, the backstory is seamlessly woven into the first few chapters. But her characterization and description of both Rath and Maura is idealized and heavy-handed, and the ease with which they solve their problems is unrealistic, even in this high fantasy setting. The overly florid prose can be difficult to navigate at times, and the large cast of characters is confusing. (Aug., 416 pp., $13.95)
