Riveting. Roth has taken the the standard sci-fi dystopia and transformed it into an action-packed psychological thriller with romance. Beatrice is a believable and relatable character and her journey will keep you up late reading!

When you are 16 you get a choice. It defines the rest of your life. There are five factions within society, each valuing a particular trait: friendliness, honesty, bravery, selflessness or knowledge. Children are raised within their parents’ faction, but at 16 they get to choose which faction they wish to be initiated into. If they fail initiation, they are forced to join the Factionless homeless roaming the streets. But not everyone fits into a faction, those called Divergents are rare, and considered dangerous by those who wish to misuse their power. For Beatrice, what seems like terrible news will turn out to be her greatest strength. (KATHERINE TEGEN, May, 496 pp., $17.99, ISBN: 9780062024022, HC, 14 & Up)
