A magical mystery and a romance mix in this long, drawn-out story. But the mystery doesn't have enough action, and a concluding scene is very out of character with the rest of the book. The romance is also very slow going.

Clay Morgan, a computer wizard and a magic practitioner, is looking for the hacker who's trying to get into Francie Stevens' company computer. Clay is attracted to Francie, but she's been hurt by love and doesn't want a relationship. When Clay tries to get to her by enlisting her aid in finding the hacker, Francie reluctantly agrees. It isn't long before he finds out that she's his fabled soul mate. But Francie doesn't believe in magic. (Medallion, Oct., 380 pp, $7.95)
