This very different mystery is part of a British series, the Seven Deadly Sins. It features detective Hermes Diaktoros, often called the Fat Man. A mysterious character, he is not connected with the police and yet has resources at the highest level. The books are all set in Greece where the English author lived for many years. The language is lyrical and detailed, allowing the reader to see and feel the surroundings. While there is a central mystery, Hermes also notices the events around the village and helps many other inhabitants change their lives. Definitely a series to follow!

A local doctor is blinded when acid is thrown in his face, but he does not want the police to investigate. A bride appears to lose her chance at happiness as well as her pride when she is stood up at the altar. The new mayor of Morfi has worked hard to improve the impoverished tiny village, yet there seems to be a plot to stop all his good work. Hermes ties the events together and brings justice, a goal that interests him more than solving legal crimes. (REAGAN ARTHUR, Jan., 256 pp., $24.99)
