The death of her father and stepmother leaves Caroline Hopewell to raise their son, Jamie. When Jamie turns 6, his mother's ex, surgeon Trey Westerly, appears and claims to be his father. Grateful he isn't seeking custody, Caroline allows Trey visitation -- no easy matter, because Jamie has a serious developmental disorder. With time, Trey realizes what a good mother Caroline is and bonds with Jamie. Marriage seems like a natural next step, and Caroline's agreeable, but her family and his mother have other ideas. Kate Welsh's The Doctor's Secret Child (3) is an ultra-traditional story focusing more on plot than romance. It's well told but won't be to everybody's taste.
