Image of The Dog in the Dark: A Novel of the Noble Dead

This is a lively, enjoyable addition to the byzantine world of the Noble Dead universe. The characters continue to develop as the half-elf, dhampir and elven dog sail off on their quest. However, it is quite verbose in places, using quite a lot of description when something short and sweet would have been better to tighten the pacing. But readers can count on a great deal of adventure and deception, which makes the somewhat lengthy read worth it.

Magiere, Leesil and the elven dog Chap set sail to search for the Orb of Air before their adversaries discover it. Much to their dismay, they have company on this adventure. Brot’an, the elven assassin, offers them his protection in order to maneuver himself into a position on the ship. Chap distrusts him and his motives, curious about the civil war that has erupted among Brot’an’s people. His suspicions are justified, as Brot’an proves he is willing to go to extreme lengths to find out what exactly Magiere did to gain the Orb of Fire. (ROC, Jan., 464 pp., $26.95)
