RT Rating

This first story involving the Don’t Mess With Texas Private Investigation Agency is an entertaining tale with delightful, fully formed characters and an intriguing mystery, along with a nod to dog lovers with a likable pooch. The secondary thread about the hero’s brother’s marital problems invokes the reader’s compassion.

Nikki Hunt surprises herself by accepting her ex-husband’s invitation to dinner. Unfortunately, it leads to her being stuck with a bill for a meal she can’t afford and then finding her ex’s body in the trunk of her car. Being accused of his murder brings her the help of cop-turned-PI Dallas O’Conner. Since he was once falsely convicted of a crime, he tends to be very sympathetic to those who find themselves in the same position. While his cop brother works to solve the murder as the homicide detective in charge, and also struggles to mend his broken marriage, Dallas and Nikki fight their attraction for one another while working to prove her innocent.
