Rifkin is immensely knowledgeable about the story's time period and spares no detail. However, the development between the two love interests is not given this same attention.

The old ways of magic are ending, and a battle for the future of mankind has begun. Martanzia Verheire has no idea when she arrives in England, fleeing a betrothal to Rathgar Relentes and deceived by her scheming uncle, how large her role in this battle will be.

Sir Branoc Valtaigne is in charge of sheltering a prisoner for King William and is shocked by the appearance of Martaniza and her maid. Sent to the northern border to protect Northumbria from the threats of both the Saxons and the Scots, Branoc knows that a battle is imminent. When the threat comes from Relentes, he must fight for his honor, his new home and his love for Martanzia. (WILD ROSE, Aug., 382 pp., $15.99)
