DREAMS AND SHADOWS
by C. Robert Cargill

Genre: Fantasy, General Fantasy

RT Rating

While some readers will surely find new territory in this debut novel, the landscape remains a familiar and well-traveled one, full of children tempted by fairies and consequences never fully understood until it is almost too late. Cargill wrangles a huge cast of typical fantasy characters (monsters and wizards and genies, oh my) that readers may have trouble keeping straight as they journey through this very pat story.

Colby is taken by fairies as a child, leaving behind a childhood that was less than perfect for a life that seems perfect indeed. But life with fairies and genies and other magical creatures is not the ideal life he imagined: He’s drawn into adventures and quests he has never dreamed of. His friend Ewan has a similar journey, both boys coming to realize that nothing is really what it seems, especially when dealing with the Limestone Kingdom. (HARPER VOYAGER, Mar., 448 pp., $24.99)
