The four stories that make up this collection are vastly different. While some include romantic elements, it is the fight scenes that will get readers’ attention. Samson’s “The Prometheus Engine” is particularly violent; however, the other stories tend to be a bit more lighthearted and fantastical in tone.

Readers will find menacing steampunk contraptions, a mad scientist, an alien visitor and time travel in this anthology. The standout story in the collection is Massey’s “Steamboat Rampage”. When an automaton is let loose on a city before the Columbian Exposition, a proper secretary and daring journalist team up to fight the metal monstrosity. (L&L DREAMSPELL, May 2011. dl. $2.99)
