Image of Echoes of Mercy: A Novel

Sawyer has written a historical masterpiece with a layered plot sequence set in 1906, when children were hired in factories and given no education. The author uses this backdrop to elaborate, with brave honesty, these unjust working conditions. The suspenseful storyline holds a high level of interest throughout.

Caroline Lang is undercover as a worker at the Dinsmore Chocolate Factory to look into the death of a child labor activist. During her investigation she befriends the factory janitor, Ollie Moore, who she hopes will lead her to the truth behind the death. But Ollie is also in disguise, working on a project of his own to improve safety conditions. Lang is stymied by Ollie who seems to have unlimited access to the factory. As they each go forward with their investigations, they are both seen as troublemakers at the factory and their lives are in danger. (WATERBROOK, Jan., 352 pp., $14.99)
