The always original Bernard delivers another Jaded Gentleman to his fate: a wonderfully engaging, independent and sassy heroine. Bernard creates a delightfully passionate romance, but the verbal sparring between her characters is the key to the story’s enchantment and the powerful feminist overtones will capture readers’ attention.

Desperate to become a doctor, Gayle Renshaw devises a plan to force Dr. Rowan West to take her on as his assistant. West has his secrets and much to lose if Gayle carries through on her plan to expose his past. Rowan would prefer the facts about his fiancée’s death remain hidden.

He tries to scare her off with the amount of hard work and study he demands from an assistant, but she earns his reluctant respect. Working so closely together leads to more than respect. As desires bloom, the enemies of the Jaded rally and Rowan realizes Gayle is in grave danger if she stays by his side. He must sacrifice her love in order to save their lives, but Gayle is determined to fight for their love. (BERKLEY SENSATION, Sep., 380 pp., $7.99)
