This story provides a fascinating look at NASCAR racing, with all of the excitement and tension, along with an interesting look at the behind-the-scenes preparations. Little Lindsey is precocious and manipulative -- but also an absolute darling. How the two main characters struggle to accept their mutual attraction and yet keep it within pre-established parameters is nicely depicted. But the book may leave those unfamiliar with the sport in the dark about much of what is going on.

When 10-year-old Lindsey travels from Kentucky to North Carolina to ask Rebecca Newman to hire her father for Becca's racing team, Becca can't turn her down. When she meets the amazingly attractive Adam Drake, she's happy she agreed to Lindsey's scheme -- especially when she finds out what a talented driver he is.

But the attraction she feels for him, and that she knows he feels for her, soon presents problems. Becca struggles to stay faithful to the memory of her dead husband while keeping things between Adam and herself on a strictly professional footing. (HQN, Sep., 384 pp., $6.99)
