American "Kat" Moore longs to uncover her mysterious Russian roots. A brass key arrives in the mail from a monk in a Pskov monastery, luring Kat into the country of her ancestors, where she lands in the middle of an investigation by the FSB (formerly KGB).

Captain Vadeem Spasonov is determined to capture the mastermind behind a smuggling ring, and the lovely Americanka seems to hold "the key."

Vadeem's head tells him that Kat must be an accomplice, but his heart doesn't want to believe it.

Susan K. Downs & Susan May Warren tells a vivacious tale full of romantic suspense in this first of the Heirs of Anton series. The villain's secret contact is easy to spot; plot issues and repetitive character actions also cause a few stumbles in an otherwise exciting read.(Jan., 288 pp., $8.97)
