This fast-paced gothic has well-developed characters and a mystery subplot that will keep readers guessing until the end. However, the protagonists' combative relationship may become tiresome to some.
Martise St. James has come to Scotland to investigate her friend's death. The prime suspect is Lord Bruce Creeghan, Mary's husband. She never suspected that Lord Creeghan would not only arouse her suspicions but also her most forbidden desires. Amid rumors of murder and mayhem, Martise must look into a second mystery -- the disappearance of an emerald she sent to Mary for safekeeping. As danger comes from within the castle, will Martise be able to trust that Lord Creeghan will keep her safe? Or is he the danger from which she must escape? (MEDALLION, Feb., 464 pp., $7.95)
