While filling in for a colleague at the emergency room, pediatrician Quinton Searle meets Beth Johnson, a young widow whose 4-year-old daughter, Carly, mistook cold tablets for candy. Desperate to live his own life rather than accept the role his well-to-do mother has chosen for him, Quinton stages an Emergency Engagement (3). Beth, financially strapped and on the verge of losing her apartment, reluctantly agrees to pose as Quinton's fiancée. Her main concern is how the charade will affect her daughter. Michele Dunaway's heartwarming story is a pleasant read with an endearing little matchmaker who nearly steals the show.
